The Tongue Matters: Orofacial Myology and Speech-Language Pathology

Participants will be given an overview of Orofacial Myology, a specialty within the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Orofacial Myologists treat Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) which focus on nasal breathing and appropriate resting postures of the tongue, lips, and jaw. Airway problems, sucking habits, tongue/lip ties, and the familiar “tongue thrust” disrupt natural resting postures. These disruptions are detrimental to facial and dental development which may cause problems with articulation of speech sounds. Participants will learn about the detailed case history obtained during a myofunctional evaluation and how OMDs can impact speech, feeding, chewing, swallowing, and breathing through interactive audience participation.

Tethered Oral Tissues Overview

Tongue Tie and Other Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs) are receiving attention due to children having difficulty with breastfeeding and the heightened awareness of facial health and development. Focus will be on tongue resting posture, mouth breathing, and possible speech delays that can occur from restricted tissue. Terminology and some classification systems will be discussed while highlighting need for a thorough functional assessment of range of motion. Clinical cases will be reviewed and expansive literature sources will be given for future study.

Dr. Dawn Moore ClinScD., CCC-SLP, COM® is the founder of Expressions Speech, Language, & Myofunctional Center in Burlington, North Carolina. Dr. Moore has over 20 years of experience in the field, earning her clinical doctorate in 2018. For 15 years, she practiced in the schools of North Carolina as both a clinician and Lead SLP and was recognized as a Teacher of Excellence. In 2010, she expanded into private practice serving children of all ages. She recently completed the rigorous training and certification process to become a Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM®), pursuing this training after struggling to find help for her own daughter with a severe tongue thrust. Through this certification, she has started treating both children and adults and regularly presents for SLPs, orthodontists, ENTs, and dentists about the impact myofunctional disorders have on speech, feeding, chewing, breathing, dentition, and sleep.

Her main interests include treating myofunctional disorders, phonological delay, and articulation disorders, specifically /r/, using her own program Let's Hear It For /R/! which was the subject of her doctoral research study. For phonology, she uses and teaches others how to use Barbara Hodson's Cycles for Phonology due to the success she continues to have with the program. She has presented around the country for various state speech conventions/associations, county speech departments, and local universities and regularly teaches live online and through on-demand recordings on Expressions Seminars.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Marble Surface

Dr. Moore's presentation style is engaging and the information presented is highly relevant and very practical. I loved the small number of participants that enabled us to ask questions and share experiences.

I loved the interactions! I typically feel nervous to ask questions, but I felt very comfortable throughout the presentation. I also loved the pace of the course!

So much great information! Discussion of clients/children/family members with airway difficulties made it more functional/relatable. Loved the pictures and real life examples.

I enjoyed the real life examples that allowed me to see how the entire body is connected, and the impacts that tongue, lip, and buccal ties have not only on speech production, but also on whole body autonomy.

After a almost 20 years as a CCC SLP, I can honestly say this was the most informative, most useful, and engaging continuing education event I’ve been a part of!

The most informative part was how connected so many things are to OMD. I had not given this much thought, but now realize the correlation. There were definitely "Wow!" moments during the workshop and Dr. Moore was great at keeping everyone involved and informed. Lots of interesting information that I received today!!

After this seminar, are you more interested in pursuing additional training in orofacial myology?
